Charles Pringuay, Toxic Ablack, and Street Art as a Design Trend in 2021/22

STREET ART

There has been an uptick in “graffiti” pillow sales over the last several months. I think this is fascinating as I purchased these fabrics a year ago last September on a total whim. You could call it an emotional purchase.

CHARLES PRINGUAY

I came across these textiles by Charles Pringuay and Toxic while on a trip to Seattle. I was flipping through Pierre Frey’s fabric wings and their “street art” textiles stopped me in my tracks.

Street diptyque

This design printed on cotton reproduces a diptych by young French artist Charles Pringuay, who was born in 1984. His predilection for working on several canvasses – which he then assembles into a single artwork – recalls the 15th and 16th century primitives whom he studied during his classical training. His cross-disciplinary style straddles painting and engraving, giving rise to highly personal and energetic artworks that blend Street Art with underground culture. – Pierre Frey

Eighty thirty

This print on linen celebrates 80 years of the Maison Pierre Frey and 30 years of Toxic’s career as an artist. As one of the pioneers of graffiti art in the 1980s, he took the walls and trains of New York as “canvasses” for his early work. Like his peer Jean-Michel Basquiat, Toxic uses art to denounce discrimination and violence against the black community. He was named a major artist by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2006. – Pierre Frey

Torrick Ablack aka Toxic

Toxic is still very active as an artist, as you can see from a few images I found on his instagram feed.

Why did these textiles resonate with me so much?

I had gone to Seattle a year ago now, last September, to hang out with a dear friend. It was her birthday so we had the perfect excuse to get away from lockdown with our families. We planned to share a hotel room, dine on the rooftop and walk around the gallery district, shops etc. Neither of us had hardly left our homes for several months.

That weekend was a harsh awakening.

Seattle, like so many other major cities around the country, had partially shut down due to Covid as well as the Black Lives Matter protests. Countless small businesses had closed and most of the storefronts were boarded up.

Seattle murals protests 2020

As we headed downtown, we realized we were about the only ones out, besides the homeless and mentally ill. It did not feel safe. The impact the pandemic had had on Seattle had not truly been felt by us (who had been sequestered away in our homes) until that moment.

There was one lone bookstore owner, who remained open, and he explained to us that there was a project going on by the gallery owners to create a book of murals etc, to document this historic time. Various artists had been commissioned to do art, in an effort to alleviate vandalism and graffiti.

WHILE AT THE SEATTLE DESIGN CENTER…

A day or so later I was in the Pierre Frey show room at the Seattle Design Center, which felt like a quiet and pristine oasis, far from downtown Seattle. No else was there shopping. I was breezing past the Pierre Frey textiles and spotted Toxic and Charles Pringuays “street art”, hanging in the fabric wings.

The social unrest, Black Lives Matter protests, and abandoned urban centers since Covid have created a hotbed of artistic expression playing out in our city’s streets.  It is more prevalent than ever.

Red, White and Blue with Brian Paquette

Red, White and Blue with Brian Paquette

I came across a book by Seattle Designer, Brian Paquette, called

AT HOME: Evocative & Art- Forward Interiors.

I tend to migrate toward colorful spaces, but I have been exploring neutral interiors more and more lately. This crazy last pandemic year has people craving calm in their interiors, myself included. As much as I love patterns and color, at the end of the day I need to rest my eyes, and turn off my visual radar to chill out.

Paquette is known for his beautiful work with neutral interiors and his use of organic shaped furnishings. He has an exquisite attention to detail.

This home featured here is one of my favorite of the ten homes highlighted in this book; a home located on Whidbey Island. As he states “This project was quite a departure in color and style from my usual work, but inspiration sprang from my childhood in Newport, Rhode Island. The client trusted that despite my portfolio of neutrals I could execute her dreams of a red, white and blue palette with ticking fabric as a tribute to the home’s past.”

He goes on to state that he channeled favorite rooms from designers such as Markham Roberts and Ashley Whitaker.
living room blue and white ticking
Red is his least favorite color while blue is his most favorite, so on he charged. It really is a classic summer house. He layered in rugs, primitive art and side tables.

Paquette has a background in painting and conceptual art which shines through in his comfortable use of art and custom details.

Ticking curtains will be added to STUDIO TULLIA’s curtains selection soon. I already use lots of ticking fabric in my collections, on the backside of pillows.

He connected two queen-size beds with a custom headboard spanning the length of the wall with the same silk pattern as the bedskirts. I love the roman shade in a striped ticking with the ribbon detail as well.  Have you noticed all the lovely lamps and custom shades throughout? A lot of the custom casegoods are from his collection.

I understand he’s going to be opening his own store in Seattle soon which I can’t wait to visit. I’m also anxious to shop some of the sources listed in the back of his book.
A few of these pillows from STUDIO TULLIA would fit right in. Enjoy 15% off all pillows through next weekend.

TURNING TOWARD BLACK & WHITE

TURNING TOWARD BLACK & WHITE

Hello Folks,

I’ve been revisiting black and white as well as moody, darker florals and grays lately.  Black and white pairs with just about any color year round but resonates with me in the cooler months as colors deepen.

BLACK, WHITE & GRAY

I am pretty happy with the new palette below but planning to add some softer, textured notes and grays to the mix in the coming months.

The Bunny Hutch fabric by Hunt Slonem for Lee Jofa has been really popular as has the FAUNA (the black spots) by Kate Spade for Kravet.   The other coordinates below work with everything and the iconic CHIANG MAI DRAGON in SMOKE is so fresh in this new color way even though its from the 20’s.

Here is how the pillow collection is looking. You may shop the full BLACK & WHITE COLLECTION with all custom sizes at my website.

Ready-mades and bargains are ready to ship right away and available at my ETSY STORE

This is another palette I came up with that adds more color and vintage wovens and needlepoint to the mix.

This pillow is a vintage Guatemalan woven pillow with embroidery. I  only have a couple left.

Pendleton Woolens in various black and whites are always a beautiful addition.

How fun are these fringe-laden pillows made from Pendleton Mill scraps!

RESEARCH

I’ve  been looking at some of these fabrics below – what do you think?

SONORA adds a sophisticated boho vibe and some gorgeous texture.

This is more a natural linen color that also adds warmth and great texture to the mix.

I hope you are warming up to FALL and getting ready for all the festivities coming just around the corner. We are about to start decorating for Halloween and planning to do a Day of the Dead shrine this year. Ill share it with you on INSTAGRAM

While Spring/Summer are my favorites, I love Fall but I start to get down about the rain and lessening of light for the next several months in Portland.  Thanks as always for reading and let me know your thoughts about the collection.

I wanted to share a few snapshots from an article recently published in Apartment Therapy featuring Kristen and her husband Ken Naffziger’s lovely home in North Portland.   Check it out.

8e7eba5c64d1a4692b7217ac9cbdae562ec5b5eaA former PR executive who went back to school and is now working as an interior designer.

She took this picture of her living room days after the photographer was there from Apartment Therapy and I think it is one of the best.  She scored that amazing coffee table at the Portland Flea market.

Kristen had asked me if I had anything that would work with the artwork by French Artist Paule Marrot, that she had found at Jonathon Adler.  The Walking Rock fabric from Pendleton Woolen Mills came to mind right away. What do you think?   I think it holds its own pretty well. We also paired it with some solid black cotton and creamy fur pillows.

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE 2016 -WEEK 6 of CHARLOTTE’S ROOM FINAL REVEAL!

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE 2016 -WEEK 6 of CHARLOTTE’S ROOM FINAL REVEAL!

Well, we managed to finish up just in time!  Here are the results.  We were lucky to have a bright sunny day for these last minute pictures, thanks to my amazing assistant, Amanda. Everything is smelling like roses and I am drinking a gin and tonic as I write this (it is after 5 pm West coast time, FYI).

FINAL REVEAL:

DSC09218.jpg

Below is a painting of our backyard fig tree that Charlotte and her friend Alex painted together last year.  I floated it in one of IKEA’s shadow box frames.

DSC09229.jpg

As you can see we have a little woodland theme going on with the deers and bunny rabbit. I know the rose floral shade on the sconce and bed linens from IKEA are a departure from the neon splatter, but it was such a lovely pattern we bent the matchy matchy rules.   Perhaps bold colors or solid colored linens would have worked better, but we wanted to make these work.  They’re cozy and a little English or something.  The framed deer art is hand cross stitched by a very patient Oregonian: a vintage find that was in perfect condition. The antique bed is an heirloom from my grandparents that my Mother stripped and refinished years ago.DSC09162.jpg

The large splatter pillow was a trial run before the curtains and the hand drawn critter pillow Charlotte drew awhile back as a prototype for a school auction project.  The cross pillow was from STUDIO TULLIA inventory and we liked it in the room.DSC09193.jpg

You can see a little bit of the furry stool we created by covering an IKEA stool.  It is the perfect little occasional stool for this tiny room and adds some much needed glamour.DSC09201.jpg

I want to show you a close up of the white bunny painting by Oregonian artist ELIZABETH SEE because she is so talented.IMG_3459.jpgWe have come quite a ways in just a couple weeks.  Here are a few before shots:

ORC pic week 5.jpg

IMG_2456.jpg

Getting that pink the right color took some work.  Between BENJAMIN MOORE PAINT and METRO PAINT we got it done.IMG_2452.jpg

The IKEA curtains were perhaps the funnest part of this project and they really set the tone for the room.DSC09290.jpg

This IKEA PS 2014 ceiling pendant is very cool in its design. The pull factor really is fun at night and gives you a diverse range of visual effects.  Her twin brother Arthur is a little jealous when it comes to the light.  Thank God they have lego building experience as they put this thing together all by themselves.  Whereas that project might have put me right over the edge.

DSC09273.jpg

This is her bookshelf which I have staged for this shoot.  The camellias ,roses and hydrangeas are from our garden. The amethyst cut crystal vase was her great grandmother’s and the other vase is a hand painted vintage vase as well.  The flower etched globe light is from IKEA.  And we all know that’s an AMERICAN DOLL in a wheelchair. The one thing in the catalog Arthur liked because it had wheels.

DSC09227.jpg

HARRY POTTER books without their covers aren’t so bad looking next to the collection of NANCY DREW books.

DSC09242.jpg

All of the pillows in this feature have been provided by my primary sponsor ~ STUDIO TULLIA!  Vintage ones (like the cool beaded rose pillow above) as well as other vintage oddities are available through TULLIA MARKETPLACE, which is not fully off the ground, but should be by this Summer.

Here are a few more pictures of the flowers up close because they are just so pretty.  The vase is by who else…IKEA.  The little painting is by Charlotte.

DSC09298.jpg

DSC09300.jpg

A FEW MORE NOTES…

We decided last minute to switch out her side table form TARGET and it needed to be white.  The finish was antique gold and it just fell flat in the corner.   We almost painted the gold framed mirror, too, but decided it added some bling and was ok as is.

IMG_0989.jpg

This room was a quite a challenge because in all honesty this room is a dog.  The room is tiny, the ceiling is slanted, the windows and trim work are funky, and many more issues I don’t need to bore you with.

The good news is that this is the room she wants to be in and is a very happy girl. She could not fall asleep last night she was so excited. I hated to wake her up this morning. This room is her safe haven, compared to the larger guest room where she was temporarily staying during this project.

IMG_3504.jpgSweet Dreams, my Sweet Charlotte.

I am excited to grab a cup of coffee tomorrow morning and indulge myself in the many final reveals as part of the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE, thanks to CALLING IT HOME.

This was a great challenge for me and 6 weeks was just about right. I am excited to do another room in the Fall.

VELVET…

VELVET…

Ive always loved velvet…for its purity of color, and its durability. So soft and seemingly delicate to the touch and yet, most of the time, you can wash it and it comes clean.  The other thing that’s great about velvet is that patina, that like no other, develops over time and that only comes from years of wear and tear.

Here are a few lovely interiors starring velvet as the lead role:

This Fall 2015’s design trends include velvet as they often due this time of  year. This is nothing new. The royals have been donning velvet frocks for years. Still being reinvented in fantastic ways today. I’ve been awestruck this past several months while watching The Tudors and Reign on Netflix (highly recommend both) with their incredible velvets, furs, brocades…

It was a turquoise velvet that truly launched my Etsy store in 2011.  I had a bolt of gorgeous bright turquoise that I’d found at an estate sale and I decided to make a pillow and post it. It sold right away and I could not make them fast enough after that, until the whole bolt was gone (that was a sad day).  Turquoise happened to be the Color the Year in 2010 and I sold a boatload.  Color of the Year in 2012 was Tangerine Tango, and I sold another boatload of orange velvet.  What will 2016 bring I wonder – rose quartz and serenity?

I stock LOTS of velvet in my store. Some are limited stock, well discounted pieces, I come across on my hunts, and others I order from Kravet, Schumacher, Pindler, Manuel Canovas, and so on:Velvet Palette Fall Winter 2014 - 4

CROSS PILLOWS OFFER STYLE AND COMFORT…and it’s time for a GIVEAWAY!

CROSS PILLOWS OFFER STYLE AND COMFORT…and it’s time for a GIVEAWAY!

I want to share some CROSS pillows with you.  The cross as a symbol has been around for along time and I thought it would be fun to delve into its meaning.  The bold colorful ones below are not of a religious nature so much as a comfort/first aid nature.  Technically I am referring to a Greek Cross, which is a cross with 4 arms of equal length. A common sign in ancient Greece, in pre-columbian America, in the near east, and in the euphrates-tigris region around 1500 B.C., according to an article written about crosses by DesignBoom.com

With the recent legalization of marijuana in Oregon, green cross signs are around every corner, offering medicinal herbs to those in need so maybe it had some subliminal effect on my interest. In honor of Oregon’s new law, I made a green on white cross pillow that offers comfort in the form of soft linen with a down insert.

This is also available in a few other colors:

Citron Green Cross Pillow

Citron Green Cross Pillow

And the classic and most iconic, would be the red:

Red and White Cross Pillow

Red and White Cross Pillow

According to wikipedia, the red cross symbol is the international sign for medic. It is associated in the U.S. with the American Red Cross, a nonprofit aid agency that helps those in need, regardless of their ability to pay. The cross was one of many symbols used to signify medic until the introduction of fire arms to battle and the increase in casualties. Henri Durant designed the red cross as we know it today after witnessing tens of thousands of soldiers left dying on the battlefield with no one to help them.  Here’s the link If you want to read more: http://www.ehow.com/facts_6761604_meaning-red-cross-symbol_.html  And, here is the skinny on the founder of the Red Cross and the symbol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Dunant

The pink and white is a gentler version that would be nice in a nursery:

Pink and White Cross Pillow

I saw a pillow like this one in the DC Designer Showhouse 2015. The designer of the nursery was Nancy Twomey and she created a lovely room, with an animal theme, as well as a Scandinavian airiness with the colors and calmness of the space.

CrossRoads Blanket by Pendleton.

CrossRoads Blanket by Pendleton.

The description for the above blanket in the Pendleton Catalog reads as follows:

The Crossroads design reflects First Nations teachings and the power of the four directions – the number “four” is sacred among many Native American tribes. East represents the physical body, the realm of the Warrior. West represents the heart and the path of the Visionary. North is the region of the mind and the wisdom of the Teacher. South represents the spirit, enlightenment and the realm of the Healer. Balance and harmony are achieved where the directions meet at the center of the Medicine Wheel. Crosses in this jacquard pattern symbolize the crossroads where the paths meet – the place where an individual becomes whole.

How’s that for some food for thought around crosses and their sybolism in art and design?

DESIGN STAR Christopher Nutter’s Upper Gallery at WASHINGTON DC’s 2015 DESIGNER SHOWCASE

DESIGN STAR Christopher Nutter’s Upper Gallery at WASHINGTON DC’s 2015 DESIGNER SHOWCASE

I wanted to share the work of Christopher Nutter, an interior designer in Washington, D.C. who recently showcased his work at the DC Designer Showcase. He designed and installed a room in the upper gallery leading into a guest bedroom of the 8,869-square-foot mansion. He along with 23 other design firms took up the challenge to transform this house that was built to suggest a “modern farmhouse” feel.  The theme Christopher ran with was butterflies, flowers and animals along with a powerful use of dazzling blue and white. What’s not to love?  I thought it was magical and loved the attention to detail in every inch of the room.

As stated in an article (see link below) by Michelle Goldchain; “Christopher Nutter’s intention for the upper gallery was to create a light, airy, and whimsical space where the walls were the art. The butterflies, flowers, and animals were hand-painted by artist Gary Goldberg. Nutter said he was inspired by Bunny Mellon and Virginia-based artist Bunny Williams, which caused him to add topiaries, a mirror from Williams’ collection, and a painting by Hunt Slonem, titled, “Untitled Bunnies.”

What do you think?

STUDIO TULLIA provided the lumbar pillows in the two chairs flanking the incredible ribbon embellished table cloth. The fabric is a Schumacher fabric, Adras Ikat in Sky by Martyn Lawrence Bullard.  The lamps, light fixture, chairs, curtains, mirror, accessories are all so carefully chosen and lovely. The room sparkles.

The long velvet bolster was a gorgeous blue Kravet velvet further embellished with a Greek Key pattern made of grosgrain ribbon on each end.  I was afraid the bolster, also by STUDIO TULLIA, was going to be too big.  Thank goodness we didn’t make it any smaller.

TIFFANY BROOKS , HGTV Design Star – Artist and Interior Designer Works Her Magic

TIFFANY BROOKS , HGTV Design Star – Artist and Interior Designer Works Her Magic

I’ve been meaning to share some work from this charismatic and talented woman since June. With the kids out of school for Summer life and work is a spiraling tug of war.

Always looking for inspiring talent, surprisingly, it sometimes finds me (or STUDIO TULLIA, that is). Tiffany purchased some pillows from me and I was thrilled to see them show up in one of her project reveals. I love to see “after” photos – one of the most rewarding things about my work.

So here are some pictures of a lovely living and dining room a la Tiffany Brooks. What really blows me away is that she is the artist who also did the art work, which seems to pull everything together.

Look at the lovely layering of textures and patterns.

Interesting vignette of the dining room. She managed to make these vintage chairs work with the finish treatment and bold color choices. So much personality in this room.

Tina Marie, designer and blogger for THE ENCHANTED HOME, discovered STUDIO TULLIA in the process of searching for decorative pillows for her veranda/loggia at her fabulous manse in New York.

I was lucky enough to be one of two final contenders in her pillow search on ETSY where my pillows will now live: in the Home of Enchantment.

This is her lovely blue and white design board of ETSY pillows she found:

Some of the final choices from STUDIO TULLIA were:

And a lovely IKAT pillow from MOTIF PILLOWS by Priscilla Elizabeth out of Charleston, SC on ETSY. What a great combination!

You have to read this post which not only has many, many pictures of my Chiang Mai Pillows in situ at her FABULOUS home but will also introduce you to the extremely entertaining world of Tina Marie. She shares on a daily basis a very social and active life, steeling iphone pics in her daily forays to shop and visit friends. If anyone can handle the years long construction and interior decoration of this French Chateau Style Home set against the lovely rolling hills of New York, Tina can.

She also has an online shop featuring lovely European lighting, tableware and accessories. I am particularly enamored of the etched bell jar lanterns and seriously contemplating a couple of these for our home:

I’ll admit — I’ve been holding on to that fabulous picture of Olivia Palermo since it was first published back in February! No palette is as definitively “spring” to me as pink and green. It’s the look of tennis courts, Masters jackets, freshly cut lawns, and graduation bouquets. (Did I mention preppy?) For interiors right now I’m loving an almost moss shade of green — especially in velvet against walnut and brass for a rich look. (Have you seen Tory Burch’s drawing room?) And fashion-wise, shades of apple and emerald green are great for fair-skinned girls like me. (Just one more reason to break out the SPF 50.) As the temperature inches higher, I hope you find a patio or garden to enjoy during these last few weeks of spring!

The new HGTV Magazine and the old Striped Pillow

The new HGTV Magazine and the old Striped Pillow

I used to work for Randolph & Hein, a posh showroom in San Francisco, about ten years ago. I really wanted to work there because they had Osborne & Little and Designer’s Guild fabric lines. Old time favorites.  The quality, colors, style, and marketing of these iconic English companies was wonderful to sell and be around. Not to mention the trade shows in NY, London, etc where I got to meet Tricia Guild, Nina Campbell, Anthony Little.   Such characters, great style, and so many gorgeous fabrics!  I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time when fabrics were discontinued and fabric wings were being given away. One of these great silks ended up in my collection, that I ultimately used for a pillow in my store.

Just my luck,  HGTV magazine chose to feature the pillow with the fabulous fabric that is not available anymore in their debut issue hitting newsstands on October 4th.

http://www.chron.com/life/article/HGTV-Magazine-debuts-Oct-4-2191560.php#photo-1629511

I have tried to track down this fabric, made several phonecalls, emails… to no avail.

Well, I have been revisiting Designer’s Guild’s latest offerings and per the usual, everything is fabulous.

I did happen to find some wonderful silk fabrics that might be appealing to a reader who likes the above pillow. What do you think?

I thought I would also share a few other fabulous shots from Designer’s Guild’s website:

Just a weekend at one of the chateaus where they have their photo shoots would make me a happy girl…

Stephen Shubel: Study in Black & White

Stephen Shubel: Study in Black & White

I am starting out the New Year with a fresh visual drink of inspiration from interior designers I have admired over the years.  I am going to seek out the extraordinary this year and try to figure out why some things certain designers do are great.

Stephen Shubel values antiques and the classics yet he finds a way to display these elements in a fresh, modern way.

I have some images of his wonderful black and white rooms, in which he often uses neutral upholstery, linens, black and white prints, photographs.  He loves large-scale busts of great men,  in plaster, carved,  and as silhouettes on paper, framed or on  pillows.

When he uses color it is bold, predominantly sunny yellows, or soft yellows or red, pink or orange, against white or cream. Of course, these observations are based on articles in magazines along with images from his portfolio.  Shubel also creates rooms bathed in a colors of French macaroons; soft pink, pistachio green. As an avid pattern lover, I am oddly drawn to his interiors.

In a recent blog interview with Diane Dorran Saeks, he provides five of his favorite whites by Benjamin Moore:

White Dove
Woodmont Cream
Cloud White
Ivory White
Decorator White

Stephen Shubel has been a San Francisco designer for decades and it looks like he has a new furniture line with SARLO, featuring many of his French finds.

Thanks Stephen Shubel, for your bold and fresh design.

I love the blend of black and white pattern

This settee is featured in his new collection with SARLO in San Francisco.

White room, bold chandeliers (2!) and bold color: yellow and orange

This is a breath of fresh air for any designer after a day of color wrestling.
